The distribution board, commonly referred to as a DB, is a 6 pole surface mount enclosure that channels electricity from the main supply into various circuits throughout a building. It is also known as a fuse box, panelboard, or circuit breaker panel.
In an electrical supply system, a distribution board is the component that divides an electricity feed into smaller circuits while providing a protective fuse or circuit breaker for each in one shared enclosure. This component may also be called a panelboard, circuit breaker panel, breaker panel, electric panel, fuse box, or simply DB box.
Usually, a main switch is part of the board, but in more recent designs, there are often one or more residualcurrent devices (RCDs) or residualcurrent breakers with overcurrent protection (RCBOs) included.
Power separation: The DB breaks down the main power supply into smaller circuits.
Protection of circuits: Circuit breakers or fuses are present in a DB to protect the circuits from overloads and faults.
Controls electricity flow: The DB ensures that electrical devices run efficiently by controlling the electricity flow.
Circuit isolation: For emergencies or maintenance, a distribution board makes it easy to isolate different circuits.
